A toxic smoke plume formed by a wildfire in Oraiokastro, Thessaloniki, has now reached as far as Attica and the Peloponnese. The phenomenon has moved southward due to prevailing winds, raising concern among residents and authorities.
“Trajectory models show that from midnight until Sunday afternoon there is dispersion of the plume over western Attica, reaching as far as Corinthia, but with very low concentrations,” meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas explained.
“The highest concentrations were in Thessaloniki and the Thermaic Gulf. Once it passed through Thessaly and Central Greece, it was clearly more diluted and only caused a slight haze in the atmosphere, nothing more,” he added.
Alert status and public guidance
Authorities emphasize the importance of precautionary measures, especially for vulnerable groups and individuals with respiratory conditions. The situation is being closely monitored by relevant agencies, which recommend limiting outdoor activities.
