Cyprus’ Eurovision 2026 entry, “Jalla” by Antigoni Baxton, has sparked a wave of public controversy over its music video, which critics claim misrepresents Cypriot culture. A group of citizens sent an open letter to the President and Board of Cyprus’ national broadcaster, RIK, expressing serious concerns about the country’s participation in this year’s competition.
The letter criticized the video for portraying Cyprus in a way that, according to the signatories, “offends the history, traditions, and aesthetics” of the island. It also flagged scenes that allegedly depict risky driving behavior, arguing that such content is inappropriate for a public production representing Cyprus internationally. The group called for the withdrawal of the song and video, transparency regarding production costs, and disclosure of the decision-makers who approved the entry.
Responding to the backlash, Antigoni Baxton told Alpha TV, “I love Cyprus and I showed a video that reflects the Cyprus I love. That’s what I will say. Let them talk.”
RIK General Director Thanasis Tsokos defended the entry, noting that the song and video have received overwhelmingly positive reactions online. “The majority of comments praise the contrast between traditional and modern Cyprus, as well as the music’s ethnic tones that highlight the island and the Mediterranean,” he said.
Tsokos added that any scenes not complying with road safety guidelines were removed, and the revised video will be reposted through the European Broadcasting Union, the organizer of Eurovision. He emphasized that the competition, now in its 70th year, celebrates cultural diversity and unites Europe through music.
“Cyprus will participate with a modern stage performance and professional production, as it has done for years,” he said.
The “Jalla” music video has already surpassed half a million views on YouTube. The song credits include Antigoni Baxton along with Connor Mullally Knight, Trey Qua, Claydee Lupa, and Paris Kalpos. Cyprus is scheduled to perform in the second half of the second semi-final on May 14, 2026.
