Μake us preferred on Google The Thissio Visitor Center of the National Observatory of Athens is inviting visitors to experience the night sky through its English-language evening tours, taking place every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday throughout August.
From 5 to 29 August 2026, English-speaking tours begin at 10:00 p.m. and last approximately 70 minutes. The program combines a guided visit to the Geoastrophysics Museum with astronomical observation, weather permitting, offering visitors a unique opportunity to discover both the scientific heritage and ongoing public outreach activities of one of Greece’s most historic research institutions.

Located on the Hill of the Nymphs, opposite the Acropolis, the Thissio Visitor Center occupies the historic Sina building, the first home of the National Observatory of Athens. Founded in 1842, the center introduces visitors to nearly two centuries of Greek astronomical history through its museum, historic scientific instruments, rare books and original telescopes, making it a destination that combines science, history and culture in the heart of Athens.

Visitors will tour the Syngrou Meridian Telescope, located at the foot of the Hill of the Nymphs, while nighttime observation will take place through a portable telescope, weather permitting. The Geoastrophysics Museum visit continues as normal.
The evening tours are open to adults and children aged six and above. Admission costs €5 per person, with tickets available online only. Individual telephone reservations are not accepted, except for organized groups of more than 10 people.
Visitors should note that there is no café on site, so bringing water is recommended, particularly during the summer months. Smoking and the consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited throughout the National Observatory’s premises, and access to the Visitor Center is available only during scheduled public tours.
