A powerful explosion destroyed an ATM located outside a supermarket in the Athens suburb of Vrilissia at around 3:50 a.m. on Friday, leaving the cash machine completely wrecked. According to initial reports, the perpetrators fled immediately after the blast, taking the cash cassettes containing the machine’s funds.
Police have cordoned off the area while specialist investigators examine how the explosive device was planted and detonated. Authorities are focused on gathering forensic evidence that could help identify and track down those responsible.
The incident has raised concerns among law enforcement officials because it occurred around the same time as the arson attack on three vehicles belonging to the Attica regional administration in nearby Marousi.
Officers from the Hellenic Police are investigating whether the two incidents are connected or whether the vehicle fire may have been intended as a diversion to facilitate the ATM bombing.
