The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has carried out an unannounced inspection at the Veterinary Service in Trikala, central Greece, as part of an investigation into agricultural and livestock subsidies linked to the country’s farm payments agency, OPEKEPE.

The operation was conducted under strict confidentiality, with investigators searching for specific financial records and beneficiary files. The inspection has renewed scrutiny of how European Union funds are administered at the regional level.

Investigators examine livestock subsidy payments

EPPO officials remained at the Trikala office until late Thursday evening, collecting documents and evidence concerning the legality of financial aid payments.

According to available information, the investigation is focused primarily on subsidies linked to livestock holdings, particularly cattle.

Trikala Deputy Regional Governor Chrysa Ntinti confirmed that the inspection had taken place in an interview with a local radio station. She said investigators are examining three separate cases involving more than one individual.

Investigation focuses on 2020–2021 period

The inquiry primarily covers the period from 2020 to 2021, although authorities are also examining reports dating back to 2019.

No official findings from the inspection have been made public, and it remains unclear whether any specific criminal liability has been established.

The collection of documents and other evidence forms part of the preliminary investigation and does not, in itself, establish that irregularities occurred or that any individuals involved are guilty of wrongdoing.
