A fire that broke out at a clothes-dyeing facility in Aigaleo, western Athens, was still burning after several hours, having spread to a clothing wholesaler and destroyed everything in its path.

Flammable materials stored at the businesses and difficult access to the affected buildings are hampering the fire service. Smoke has affected the air over Piraeus and surrounding areas, and damage so far is extensive. Firefighters have not said the blaze is under control, and full extinguishing has not yet been achieved.

As the fire spread, people near the buildings were moved away as a precaution, with a safety distance of at least 400 metres requested. Hellenic Police assisted with the evacuation.

Because other businesses and homes stand around the site, firefighters secured the perimeter immediately to protect neighbouring buildings. At the scene are 35 firefighters with 11 vehicles and a special boom-equipped vehicle, with water tankers provided by the Municipality of Aigaleo.
