A fire broke out in the holding cells of the Lesbos Police Directorate shortly after midnight, causing alarm as around 15 detainees were inside the facility at the time.
The blaze started on the first floor of the building in Mytilene, the capital of the Greek island of Lesbos. According to information available, security procedures were immediately activated and the detainees were moved to a safe area.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building.
Authorities have identified a detainee of Greek origin as the suspected person responsible for starting the fire. The individual is reportedly facing charges related to theft, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
No injuries were reported among the detainees or police officers who were inside the building when the fire occurred.
