Video footage released has revealed, frame by frame, the escape of the inmate from Korydallos Prison, Greece’s largest correctional facility, triggering alarm among authorities. In the material broadcast by MEGA the man can be seen running away from the detention complex while two prison officers pursue him just a few meters behind.

The escape took place on Tuesday morning at approximately 8:30 a.m., while prison staff were carrying out the daily supply delivery process. According to reports, the 48-year-old inmate, who is of Albanian origin, took advantage of the fact that the main gate was open for operational needs and managed to pass in front of guards unnoticed.

The inmate worked in the prison’s central storage facility and appears to have identified the right gap in supervision to make his move. Within seconds, he had left the prison grounds, with staff only realizing what had happened moments later before immediately launching a pursuit.

A key individual who enters the prison complex daily to carry out infrastructure-related work told MEGA exclusively that although security checks are conducted, there are still vulnerabilities in the system.

“To get inside, you go through security screening. You always enter through the main gate. They inspect your belongings, search you, make you remove your belt and any metal objects, and pass everything through a scanner. There are always people at the entrance when you go in or out—you can’t just come and go freely. He could have hidden underneath a vehicle, maybe under a truck,” the source said.

The 48-year-old was serving a seven-year sentence in connection with drug-related offences and had been deemed eligible for regular prison leave. Over the past six months, he had been granted three temporary leaves and had returned as required each time, making his escape all the more unexpected for authorities.

A delivery driver also spoke exclusively to MEGA, describing security measures around the prison’s supply warehouse as relatively lax.

“They let me in and I delivered pizzas inside. The guard simply opened the door, I handed over the pizzas, collected the money and left. The order was for inmates. I arrived, rang the bell, and when the guard saw me—because I delivered there regularly—he opened the small gate and allowed me to enter.”

A large-scale police operation is now underway to locate the fugitive, while investigators are focusing on how he managed to flee so easily. Two prison officers have already been arrested in connection with the incident and are facing charges related to the release of a prisoner. Disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated as part of the investigation.
