A heavy atmosphere surrounded the funeral of a mother and her son who were killed inside their home in Longos, near Aigio, in western Greece.
Relatives and friends gathered at the Church of Saint Demetrios to say their final farewell to Maria, 54, and her son Olympios, 26, who were found dead after the double homicide that shocked the local community.
The funeral service began at 11:30 a.m., with the victims’ bodies inside the church. Family members said they were still struggling to understand what had happened.
“I was shocked, I couldn’t believe it,” a relative of Maria said outside the church. He added that he believed the couple had been getting along well and, when asked what might have led to the tragedy, replied: “Those secrets went with them. It is a tragedy.”
A 65-year-old Italian man, Maria’s partner, has been arrested and is accused of the double homicide. He was expected to appear again before an investigating magistrate in Aigio on Saturday to give his statement, while continuing to deny any involvement in the killings.
Investigation focuses on possible motive and missing items
Police are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the deaths. Authorities are examining several elements, including the fact that there were no signs of forced entry at the house and no suspicious movements were captured by security cameras.
These details have led investigators to believe that the person responsible was likely already inside the home, where, according to witness accounts, only the victims and the 65-year-old man were present.
Reports indicate that the couple had recently faced serious personal and financial difficulties. Authorities are also examining claims that tensions arose after Maria sold a plot of land in Aigio and gave the money to her son.
The investigation is also focusing on two missing household items from the home — a mop and a bucket — which police believe could potentially provide important evidence. The house was reportedly found in order, but the absence of the items raised questions.
The 65-year-old has reportedly claimed that he used strong cleaning products after a health-related incident in the bathroom, saying he cleaned himself, his clothes and the area afterward.
Authorities are examining whether the missing items could provide evidence linking the suspect to the deaths or support his account of events.
