A temporary swimming ban has been imposed at the beach called “Akrotiri” in Pefkochori, Halkidiki, on account of a sewage leak on Thursday morning, according to an announcement by the Municipality of Kassandra.

Municipal authorities reported that the incident occurred when a pressurized sewage pipeline serving Pefkochori burst, resulting in wastewater escaping into the surrounding area. Technical crews were mobilized immediately and proceeded with emergency repair works, successfully stopping the leak and restoring the damaged section of the network.

Following the repair, the municipality carried out washing and disinfection procedures, including chlorination of the affected zone, to mitigate any public health risks.

The Public Health Directorate of Halkidiki and the Environmental Upgrade Center for Anti‑Pollution Units were notified to conduct sampling and laboratory analyses to assess water quality and environmental impact.

Based on precautionary guidelines, the Deputy Regional Governor of Halkidiki issued a decision imposing a temporary ban on swimming within a 200‑meter radius on either side of the discharge point. The restriction will remain in place until sampling is completed and laboratory results are evaluated.

The Municipality of Kassandra emphasized that it has taken “all necessary actions” and remains in continuous cooperation with the competent authorities to monitor the situation and ensure public safety.
