A major police operation was taking place on the large island of Crete since the early morning hours of Sunday, with no less than 48 individuals arrested, including business people, an active-duty officer, two army officers and an air force officer.
The raid, overseen by eight prosecutors, follows a lengthy investigation into a crime gang trafficking drugs and weapons, as well as engaging in extortion.
The cities of Chania (Hania) and Rethymno were where most of the arrests were made.
So far, according to police, searches have turned up cannabis and cocaine, along with weapons, including assault rifles.
Several businesses were raided during the operation, such as hotels and beach bars that authorities claim are being used to launder proceeds from criminal activities.
The entire operation is coordinated by the police command in Chania.
