A court has sentenced the woman who accused actor Petros Filippidis of repeated rape to 12 months in prison, suspended for three years. Filippidis was acquitted in that case and later filed a criminal complaint against her.

The court found her guilty of false accusation and false testimony, recognizing as a mitigating factor that she had no prior criminal record. The ruling went against the prosecutor’s recommendation, as the prosecutor had asked for her acquittal, saying there was not enough evidence of intent or guilt.

“Shame!” in the Courtroom

The guilty verdict sparked an outburst in the courtroom. A woman in the audience shouted “Shame!”, prompting the presiding judge to respond and defend the decision.

“When I go home, I want to have peace of mind. If I am wrong, I am human and it can happen. Rest assured that I acted according to my conscience. I could have come here and said, ‘Oh, let’s just not make an issue of it.’ But that is not what I studied for. I judge according to my conscience. I am neither a fortune teller nor God,” the judge said.

The Trial and the Filippidis Side

In her defense, the accused stood fully by her original rape complaint. Filippidis’ lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, had called for her to be strictly punished, stressing that his client’s acquittal in that case was unanimous and final. He had also said he would appeal to the Supreme Court if she were acquitted.

Despite his acquittal on that complaint, Filippidis has been convicted on appeal of two attempted rapes against two other women and sentenced to three years in prison, suspended for three years.
