Μake us preferred on Google A hostage situation in the Piraeus suburb of Nikaia ended without reported injuries on Wednesday evening after police arrested a 49-year-old man accused of holding his partner inside their home.
Police were called to an apartment on Sofokleous Street following a heated argument. Officers cordoned off the area after the man claimed he was armed and holding his wife hostage.
According to local media reports, the situation was resolved after police negotiators intervened. The 44-year-old woman was freed and the man was arrested. Public broadcaster ERT reported that both the man and the woman appeared to have a history of psychiatric conditions. The information has not been independently verified.
Police were searching the apartment to determine whether any weapons were present.
The incident comes amid heightened concern over domestic violence in Greece. Earlier this week, Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis said the number of reported domestic violence cases had increased significantly, with police making around 100 arrests every night following complaints. So far this year, 11 women have been killed in Greece in cases linked to domestic violence. According to data, domestic violence complaints to Greek police have risen by more than 300% since 2020.
