Police are investigating the mysterious death of a man who was found charred in a car in the central Athenian neighborhood of Pagrati in the early hours of Thursday.
According to reports, shortly before 1 am on Thursday, the fire department was alerted to a blaze at a car parked in Pagrati. During the operation, the firefighters discovered the burnt body of a man in the passenger seat.
Police were immediately notified and quickly cordoned off the area. The body was transported for forensic examination, while the case was handed over to the Hellenic Police’s Security Division. Investigators are considering the possibility of foul play.
The victim’s identity remains unknown at this time, while, according to authorities, the vehicle, a red Jeep, bore foreign license plates. An investigation into the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently underway.
A mobile phone found near the vehicle is being examined for potential links to the incident, according to a report by public broadcaster ERT.
Police are also reviewing footage from surveillance cameras in the area as part of their investigation.
A full autopsy will be conducted by the Forensic Medical Service after the initial examination failed to determine the exact cause of death.
