The sun was playing hide-and-seek over the last weekend. Golden rays timidly emerged from behind the clouds, despite meteorologists’ assurances that the weather would be very warm. Clouds, sunshine and, at the same time, a chill in the air! Temperatures had dropped considerably, people were reaching for their jackets and coats, and some women had chosen brightly colored scarves to brighten up their outfits.
Coffee consumption has been on the rise, as have purchases of cookies and cakes. Many are opting for fragrant tea and waffles instead of ice cream. Up in Mount Parnitha and, especially, the beautiful Vasilitsa mountain area, a considerable amount of snow has fallen. The images coming from these places have been cinematic, unique and truly wonderful! Snow-white landscapes seem to invite everyone to come and explore them.
Let us not forget that in other years, we have had to wait until December for snowfall. The October 28 national holiday offers a wonderful opportunity to escape to beautiful, snow-covered destinations and enjoy excursions high into the mountains.
In Athens, my favorite place for a stroll and a coffee is the area beneath the Acropolis. Dionysiou Areopagitou, with its distinctive paving stones designed by architect Dimitris Pikionis, welcomes visitors with its own unique charm.
The café and restaurant on the second floor of the Acropolis Museum is an ideal spot for coffee, sweets and a meal. And when it rains, the view of the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis through the large glass windows is simply spectacular!
Belle Époque at the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation
Whatever tricks the weather may have in store, the major landmark exhibitions are beginning to open.
At the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation, housed in a beautiful building in the Pangrati neighborhood of Athens, the remarkable exhibition Belle Époque will run from late October through mid-December, featuring works by some of the world’s leading international artists.
The foundation is also a wonderful place to enjoy a coffee and a snack in an exceptional setting, making it an inviting destination for an autumn outing that combines art, culture and a little relaxation.
