The Greek Federation of Secondary Education State School Teachers (OLME) has announced a work stoppage to allow teachers to participate in demonstrations in support of seafarers.

The action will take place in Attica and Achaia, beginning at noon and continuing until the end of the work shift, a period of approximately two hours.

The Confederation of Civil Servants (ADEDY) has also called a work stoppage in Attica and Achaia. In Thesprotia, the stoppage will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until the end of the work shift.

Demonstrations are scheduled for the afternoon in Attica, Thessaloniki, Elefsina, Lavrio and Chalkida.

At evening schools in Piraeus, a separate work stoppage is planned from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Seafarers Demands

Seafarers are demanding a 12% increase in pay under collective bargaining agreements, the designation of dangerous maritime areas such as war zones, and improved crew staffing levels. They are also seeking a seven-hour working day and the mandatory presence of a doctor aboard ships, citing the risks posed by armed conflicts.

Ships are expected to remain docked on Friday, Oct. 30, at Greece’s main ports on account of a seafarers strike. Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio, Patra, Igoumenitsa, Elefsina and the Rio-Antirrio will be impacted.

On the same day, the Federation of Permanent Port Employees of Greece has called a three-hour work stoppage, from 10am to 1pm. \

Seafarers conducted periodic strikes throughout 2026, with educators often participating. The seafarer unions took a repreieve from mobilizations during the busy summer months, so as not to disrupt the country’s tourist industry.
