A series of coordinated attacks occurred targeting supermarkets and ATMs by unknown individuals after midnight on Dec. 18, authorities confirmed. The incidents took place across various neighborhoods of the broader Athens region between late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
According to reports, unidentified perpetrators targeted six supermarkets in Zografou, Kypseli, Kaisariani, Glyfada, and Patissia.
Reports indicate that these acts of vandalism appear to have been carried out using sledgehammers, with the culprits causing damage to the glass facades of the supermarkets.
In addition to the damage inflicted to the supermarkets, attacks were reported on two ATMs between 1:00 and 1:30 a.m.
As reported the perpetrators also used black spray paint to write slogans associated with the anarchist movement on a nearby walls, suggesting a political or ideological motive behind the incidents.
Authorities detained ten individuals for questioning but later released them due to a lack of evidence linking them to the crimes. Investigations are ongoing as police work to identify the culprits responsible for the overnight spree of destruction.
