Greece‘s Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michailidou, released a video marking the International Day of Older Persons, paying tribute to older people and their place in society.

In the video, older people are asked what advice they would give their 20-year-old selves if they could meet them today. Their answers, ranging from independence, education and self-care to dancing and lighthearted family mischief, distill a lifetime of wisdom with candor and humor.

One said a young person should always stay independent. Another urged having fun and dancing. One person said simply, “I wish I had studied,” while another advised savoring every moment. Others said they would have taken better care of themselves, would have gained the knowledge that would have made life easier, and would tell their younger selves to enjoy life and be careful.

“We will not all keep the same piece of advice, but we keep the love with which it is given to us,” the minister says at the close of the video. “To those who gave us their time so generously, let us make sure we give back a little of our own every day.” She ended by urging viewers to care for and love older people today and every day.

The International Day of Older Persons is observed each year on October 1 to highlight the needs and rights of older people and their active participation in social life.
