The 35-year-old man who violently attacked a taxi driver in Nea Ionia, north of Athens, has been remanded in custody after appearing before judicial authorities.
The man faces charges of aggravated intentional bodily harm and threats. He was ordered detained pending further proceedings after authorities deemed him a risk to commit further offenses.
The 35-year-old’s father was called to testify in his defense and said his son has serious psychiatric problems and a disability rating of more than 67%.
A psychiatric evaluation has also been ordered to assess the defendant’s condition.
According to the account given by the defendant, the incident began after the taxi reached Nea Ionia and the driver told him that her point-of-sale (POS) terminal had no signal.
He claimed that the driver then continued driving around for about 15 minutes. When he complained about the delay, he said, she braked abruptly, causing him to hit his head against the seat and breaking his glasses.
He said the incident that followed began after that.
According to the allegations, the man attacked the driver by biting her ear and threatening to kill her. The woman managed to get out of the taxi and call for help, but the defendant continued chasing her, until police arrived and restrained him.
