A Spanish citizen, one of those evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius earlier this month and currently in quarantine at a military hospital in Madrid, has tested positive for hantavirus, Spain’s Health Ministry announced.

This is the second positive case among the 14 Spanish nationals who disembarked from the luxury cruise ship in Tenerife. About 150 passengers and crew from 23 countries were on board the vessel when it first reported an outbreak of severe respiratory illness to the World Health Organization on May 2.

After it was confirmed that the Spanish citizen had contracted hantavirus, he was transferred to an isolation unit at the Gómez Ulla Hospital, the Health Ministry said in a post on X. The risk to the wider population has not increased, as the case was identified among people who were already in quarantine, it stressed.
