Spanish-language cinema comes into the spotlight this week as FeCHA – the Festival de Cine Hispanófono de Atenas, kicks off on Thursday for its 10th edition with dozens of films, premieres, and international talent.

A cultural highlight in Athens, FeCHA has for a decade brought Spanish-language film to the Greek capital’s summer cinemas and cultural venues connecting audiences the Hispanic world.

The 2026 edition marks a milestone anniversary with screenings taking place at open-air cinemas Ellinis Cinemax and Aello Cinemax, as well as at the Hellenic American Union. The Instituto Cervantes in Athens will be hosting a post-festival event on May 29.

Running through May 28, the festival presents a rich lineup of feature films and shorts from filmmakers in Spain, Columbia, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Ecuador, opening with Homo Argentum and closing with Un Poeta. This year’s selection includes titles such as Belén, Las Delicias del Jardín, Un Hijo, México 86, Una Quinta Portuguesa, Tierra de Nadie, Nueve Reinas, El Aura, Nosotros, Estimados Senores, La Isla de los Faisanes, El Espiritu de la Colmena, Los Amantes Astronautas, Muy Lajos, Un Cabo Suelto, Cuerpo Celeste, Hiedra, and Mistura, and a tribute screening to the work of Argentine director Fabián Bielinsky.

Special guests this year include directors Albert Pintó, Asier Urbieta, Avelina Prat, and Helena Taberna, actor Ubeimar Ríos, and producer Álvaro Gutiérrez. Taberna and Urbieta are also scheduled to lead a masterclass on contemporary cinema.

* Organizers announced on Thursday that due to expected rain, weekend screenings (May 23-24) will be moved indoors to Aello Cinemax (140 Patission Street), with all tickets and invitations remaining valid.
