Kythnos is in a festive mood just hours before the Aug. 15 celebration of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, with events centered on the Panagia Kanala shrine, the patron saint of the Cycladic island.

From the entrance of the shrine, Kwstas Filippaios described the atmosphere surrounding the celebrations while highlighting Kythnos’ natural beauty and local traditions.

The area is known for its distinctive landscape, where the island’s unique pine forest meets its beaches. The Aug. 15 festivities are also accompanied by traditional all-night celebrations, with violin and lute music playing a central role.

Reenacting the discovery of the icon

A highlight of this year’s celebrations will be a reenactment of the discovery of the icon of the Virgin Mary.

According to local tradition, the icon was found in the channel between Kythnos and the nearby island of Serifos. This is said to be the reason it was given the name “Kanala.”

The reenactment will culminate in a religious procession carrying the icon toward the marina.

Kythnos looks to extend the tourist season

Tourism is also a focus for the island, with Filippaios describing September as one of the best times to visit Kythnos. Prices are more affordable during the month, he said, while the island remains an attractive destination.

He also called on ferry operators to consider extending the high-speed ferry service from Piraeus, Athens’ main port, through the end of September rather than ending the service on Sept. 13 as currently scheduled.

Kythnos’ proximity to Athens, combined with its beaches, local traditions and distinctive natural landscape, makes it a popular and relatively affordable option for travelers seeking a nearby getaway in the Cyclades.
