Six students were discharged from a local hospital in north-central Greek city of Katerini on Friday after falling ill during a school trip to Mount Olympus, where they had been staying at the Petrostouga alpine refuge at an altitude of more than 1,900 meters.

The students, aged 17-18, were among 29 pupils from Pinewood American International School of Thessaloniki. They had traveled to Mount Olympus on Thursday, accompanied by three teachers and two mountaineers.

The six developed severe symptoms late Thursday while at the refuge, prompting their accompanying teachers to call the emergency number 112. Fire brigade rescue teams reached the area, while a civil protection helicopter was dispatched to evacuate the students to Litochoro. They were subsequently transferred to the Katerini General Hospital.

Following medical examinations, the school said the students’ symptoms were attributed to suspected food poisoning. Further laboratory tests are pending to establish the precise cause.
