Police in Greece have arrested an 82-year-old obstetrician in the city of Patras in connection with a case involving online material depicting the sexual abuse of minors. The investigation was carried out by the country’s Cybercrime Division following international cooperation with authorities abroad.

The case began after information was shared with Greek authorities by the U.S.-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which monitors and tracks the online distribution of illegal child abuse material. According to the data received, an internet user had uploaded unlawful content to an online platform.

Through analysis of electronic records and digital traces, investigators were able to identify the suspected user and trace the activity to the 82-year-old doctor. Police then located his residence in Patras and conducted a search on the morning of March 6, in the presence of a judicial official.

During the search, officers seized a mobile phone, an external hard drive, and two internal computer hard drives. Initial examination of the devices by specialized police officers reportedly uncovered a large number of photos and videos depicting the sexual abuse of minors, some believed to be under the age of 12.
