A dog has died after eating a toxic pufferfish that had washed ashore on a beach in southern Crete, according to its owner, who is urging other pet owners to exercise caution when walking their animals along the coast.

The incident took place at Kaloi Limenes, on the southern coast of Heraklion, where the dog reportedly found and ate a pufferfish that had been washed onto the beach by the sea.

According to the owner’s account, the animal died within just 30 minutes of ingesting the fish.

Following the incident, the owner shared a public warning, urging fellow pet owners to be especially careful when walking their dogs on beaches, where washed-up marine life may pose a serious risk.
