Ferry services at Greece’s major ports and the country’s entire rail network will be interrupted on Friday by a 24-hour strike, while port workers in Piraeus will also stage an industrial action.
Three seafarers’ unions have called the maritime strike at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio, Patras, Igoumenitsa, Elefsina and Rio-Antirrio, while the federation representing permanent port employees has announced a three-hour work stoppage from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The unions are demanding improved working conditions, renewed collective labor agreements, greater protection for seafarers operating in conflict zones, a seven-hour working day, a five-day week and a 35-hour working week. They are also calling for a doctor to be present on board ships.

Trains and suburban railway services will also remain suspended following a 24-hour strike called by the Panhellenic Federation of Railway Employees in support of train drivers. The action follows a court ruling declaring an earlier strike illegal after an appeal by Hellenic Train.
The company argues that the new mobilization conflicts with the ruling, which it says explicitly prohibited future strikes on the same issues. Train drivers are seeking improvements in rail safety, rolling stock conditions, staffing levels and personnel management.
Meanwhile, the Piraeus Labor Center has called a 24-hour citywide strike in solidarity with International Dockworkers’ Day. A rally is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Piraeus Municipal Theatre Square.
