Thousands of Greeks are waiting for the arrival of the Holy Fire in Greece for the culmination of the Paschal (Easter) celebrations at the stroke of midnight on Holy Saturday, when priests across the country will chant together with the faithful, “Christ is Risen.”

The Holy Fire is expected to arrive in Athens around 7 pm on a special flight from Jerusalem escorted by a delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Katsaniotis, who will receive the Holy Fire from the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III.

According to an official announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Holy Fire is expected to arrive at Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” at approximately 7:00 p.m. this evening. Following its arrival, the flame will be distributed across the entire Greek territory.

Leading the mission to transport the Holy Fire from Jerusalem to Athens is Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Loverdos. Among the delegation are New Democracy MP Maximos Charakopoulos—representing the Hellenic Parliament and serving as head of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy—His Eminence Metropolitan David of Grevena, and the Exarch of the Holy Sepulchre.
