A major police operation is underway following the escape of an inmate from Korydallos Prison on Tuesday morning, with two prison officers arrested in connection with the incident. The escaped prisoner is a 48-year-old man of Albanian origin who was serving a prison sentence for drug-related offenses.

According to a police statement, the inmate was assigned to work at the Central Warehouse of Correctional Facilities and managed to escape while carrying out bread transportation duties.

The prisoner was serving a sentence for drug-related offenses. Authorities noted that he had previously been deemed eligible for regular prison leave by the competent council.

During the past six months, he had been granted three regular leaves of absence, fully complying with all conditions and returning to prison on time each time to continue serving the remainder of his sentence.

Following the escape, police launched a large-scale search operation to locate the fugitive.

As part of the investigation, two prison officers were arrested by the Piraeus Sub-Directorate for Crime Investigation and Detection. They are accused of facilitating the release of a prisoner.

Authorities also confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated in parallel with the criminal investigation.

The search for the escaped inmate remains ongoing.
