A 75-year-old woman escaped serious injury after jumping from the balcony of her burning first-floor apartment into the arms of passersby during a dramatic apartment fire in the Athens district of Kallithea on Sunday afternoon.

The jump and rescue were recorded on video.

The fire broke out at around 4 p.m. while an elderly couple was inside the apartment. The woman’s husband managed to escape through a rear exit, but the 75-year-old became trapped on the balcony as flames and thick smoke engulfed the home.

Encouraged by bystanders gathered below, the woman leapt from the balcony and was caught by two passersby, avoiding serious injury. The apartment was completely destroyed in the blaze.

“I saw the elderly woman shouting, ‘Help, help,’ so I stopped my motorcycle and told her, ‘Jump, I’ll catch you,'” one of the rescuers said. “Another young man came over, she jumped and together we caught her.”

Another witness described the tense moments before the rescue.

“The woman was shouting and there was fire on both sides of her. She had moved to the corner of the balcony and we kept yelling, ‘Jump, jump.’ We caught her at the last moment. One of the young men was injured because, naturally, she landed with considerable force,” he said.
