Μake us preferred on Google A timelapse video recorded from the summit of Mount Kithairon captures the minute-by-minute progression of the devastating wildfire that broke out in southern Boeotia and spread toward Porto Germeno, leaving behind vast burned areas and extensive damage.
The footage was recorded by a camera installed on the mountain by the E.RA.DIK. Association, with the support of the group’s volunteers and supporters. According to the association, the camera and accompanying weather station were originally installed to monitor weather conditions and the natural environment. Instead, they documented one of the region’s most destructive wildfires in recent years.
The timelapse shows the fire spreading rapidly across the southern slopes of Mount Kithairon, with flames advancing toward the wider Porto Germeno area during the early morning hours of Aug. 1.
The footage reveals multiple large fire fronts developing across an extensive area. The blaze was so intense that it generated pyrocumulus clouds—towering clouds formed by the intense heat and gases produced by large wildfires.
The fire began in southern Boeotia and, fueled by adverse weather conditions, spread rapidly toward Porto Germeno, advancing almost to the shores of the Saronic Gulf. Its further advance was ultimately slowed after it reached areas that had already burned, terrain with limited combustible vegetation, and the coastline, all of which helped contain the wildfire.
