Donald Trump sent a tough message signaling a willingness to clash with US NATO allies, directed at major European countries, prompted by their refusal to contribute to the American-Israeli military campaign against Iran to the extent that the US president desired.
In his first post, on Truth Social, Trump attacked both the United Kingdom and France (among others), arguing that if they want oil, they should go get it themselves from the Strait of Hormuz.
“All of those countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT. You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us. Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil! President DJT”
In a second post on the same topic, Trump addressed France specifically, arguing among other things that the US would remember its stance regarding its refusal to contribute to the killing of the “Butcher of Iran” — apparently referring to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“The Country of France wouldn’t let planes headed to Israel, loaded up with military supplies, fly over French territory. France has been VERY UNHELPFUL with respect to the “Butcher of Iran,” who has been successfully eliminated! The U.S.A. will REMEMBER!!! President DJT”
This is a significant and confrontational piece of news. Trump is essentially warning European NATO allies that the US will not defend or assist them if they refuse to align with American military operations in the Middle East.
