Museums across Greece are celebrating International Museum Day today, May 18, with free admission and a wide range of cultural events. Visitors are being invited to take part in educational programs, themed tours, lectures, screenings, exhibition openings, interactive workshops, concerts, and theatrical performances, many of which will continue in the days ahead.

Since 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has designated May 18 as a day dedicated to highlighting the role of museums in contemporary society. The initiative aims to emphasize the importance of museums as spaces for cultural exchange, “with the goal of fostering education, promoting mutual understanding, and encouraging peace and cooperation among peoples.”

Each year, International Museum Day is organized around a central theme that explores different dimensions of museums’ contribution to society. The theme for 2026, “Museums Unite the World,” underscores the role of cultural institutions as bridges of communication, dialogue, and understanding.

As part of this year’s celebrations, the Greek branch of ICOM is hosting a series of cultural events throughout Greece during the month of May.
