A tragic accident occurred in Kalyves, Apokoronas, Crete, where a 2.5-month-old baby suffocated while sleeping between their parents. The parents, a Finnish couple aged 28 and 26, reportedly rolled onto the infant during the night, causing the child’s death.
Immediate Response and Hospitalization
Upon realizing what had happened, the couple contacted local police and emergency medical services (EKAV). The baby was first taken to the Vamou Health Center and later transferred to Chania Hospital, where doctors confirmed the infant’s death.
The young parents, described as being in severe emotional distress, were initially detained by Greek police but later released. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Context of the Tragedy
The couple had been visiting Crete for vacation. On the day of the incident, they attended a wedding and returned to their hotel room afterward. They placed the baby in the middle of the bed, where it appears the infant was accidentally suffocated during sleep.
Preliminary reports suggest that the parents had consumed a significant amount of alcohol, which may have contributed to the accident. Toxicology results are expected to confirm these details.
