A new witness account has shed light on the escape of Alkét Rizai, an Albanian prisoner serving a lengthy sentence who failed to return to prison after being granted temporary leave.

According to the testimony of a driver who was in the area shortly after the violent incident in Anavyssos, south of Athens, Rizai placed a police beacon on the roof of the black SUV he was driving. The beacon was reportedly the type used by Greece’s police on unmarked vehicles.

One of the people traveling with Rizai spoke to the driver through a loudspeaker, instructing him to move aside and clear the way so they could pass without obstruction.

Violent incident at beach bar

The incident occurred one day before the expiration of Rizai’s five-day prison leave. He had gone with a group to a beach bar in Anavyssos when an argument broke out.

According to the account, Rizai was playing music from his vehicle at a very high volume. The owner of the establishment came outside to confront him, triggering a heated argument.

The situation quickly escalated when customers and employees came outside. Rizai pulled out a gun, and authorities are seriously examining whether he fired a shot into the air.

One arrest and injuries

A 27-year-old Afghan national, who worked as a security guard at the beach bar, has already been arrested in connection with the incident.

He is accused of attempting to fatally injure another person with a firearm. Two passersby were also lightly injured during the incident.

Police believe Rizai may have fled Greece

Police investigating Rizai’s whereabouts believe he may have already left Greece.

Investigators reportedly suspect that the fugitive crossed the country’s borders and escaped either to Albania or Kosovo.
