Doctors in northern Greece are expected to begin the process of waking a seven-year-old girl who survived the devastating road crash in Halkidiki that claimed the lives of her parents and infant sibling.

The child, who is from Moldova, has been receiving treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit of Hippokrateio Hospital in Thessaloniki since the collision. According to her medical team, she remains in critical but stable condition with multiple fractures. Doctors hope to remove her from mechanical ventilation and assess her ability to breathe independently.

Aunt Arrives to Take Guardianship

The girl’s maternal aunt arrived in Thessaloniki on Sunday and is expected to assume legal guardianship. At the same time, procedures have begun to repatriate the bodies of the child’s parents and six-month-old sibling to Moldova.

The honorary consul of Moldova said the girl’s condition is stable and that doctors plan to wake her, allowing her to see her aunt for the first time since the crash.

He also expressed condolences to the victims’ relatives and said efforts are underway to complete the legal and administrative procedures required for the guardianship.

Fatal Head-On Collision

The family had travelled to Greece from Moldova for a holiday when the tragedy occurred on the Nea Moudania–Sithonia provincial road in Halkidiki.

Their car was involved in a head-on collision with a fuel tanker, killing both parents and the family’s six-month-old baby.

The 44-year-old tanker driver has been released pending the outcome of expert reports and forensic examinations, which are expected to clarify the circumstances of the crash.

Warning Over Fraudulent Fundraising Claims

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of support in both Greece and Moldova, with individuals and local authorities offering financial assistance to help cover the cost of repatriating the victims.

However, officials have also warned of reports of a potentially fraudulent fundraising campaign linked to the case.

The Moldovan honorary consul urged anyone wishing to help the family to contact the country’s embassy or consulate to verify that any donations are directed through legitimate channels.
