An elderly woman died tragically after a fire broke out in her apartment on Skiathou Street in the Athens suburb of Patisia.

According to reports, the elderly woman and her husband were inside the home when the fire started in the kitchen. Residents of the apartment building noticed the thick smoke and attempted to break down the apartment door, as they knew the elderly couple had mobility issues. However, their efforts were unsuccessful.

A total of 14 firefighters arrived at the scene with five fire engines and a specialized aerial ladder vehicle.

When firefighters reached the apartment, the elderly woman had already died. Her husband was rescued and taken to the hospital, where he remains in very serious condition.
