Μake us preferred on Google Greece is set for a gradual change in weather this weekend, with temperatures remaining high through Saturday before rain and thunderstorms arrive in parts of the country.
Friday and Saturday will bring mostly sunny conditions, with temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius locally. The first more organized weather shift of September is expected from Saturday evening, although forecasters say it does not yet mark a definitive start to autumn.
Sunny weather through Saturday
Friday will be mostly sunny across the country, with only limited cloud development around mountainous areas of western Thessaly and eastern Epirus during the afternoon. These clouds may produce brief, localized showers or rain.
Elsewhere, clear skies are expected. Temperatures will reach 33 to 36 C in northern lowland mainland areas, 34 to 36 C in western mainland Greece, around 34 C in the Ionian Islands and 35 to 37 C in eastern mainland areas.
Northwesterly winds in the Aegean will reach 3 to 5 Beaufort.
In Attica, long periods of sunshine are expected, with temperatures ranging from 21 to 35 C.
In Thessaloniki, mostly sunny conditions will prevail, with only a few thin clouds. Temperatures will range from 20 to 34 C.
Saturday will also remain mostly clear. Temperatures will reach 32 to 34 C in northern Greece and around 34 to 36 C in central and southern mainland areas.
Northerly winds will reach 4 to 5 Beaufort in the Ionian Islands and up to 5 to 6 Beaufort in parts of the central Aegean.
Rain and thunderstorms arrive Sunday
The weather is expected to turn more unsettled on Sunday, with showers and localized rain forecast for Central Greece, Thessaly, Epirus and Macedonia, and possibly parts of Thrace. The most significant activity is expected in Macedonia.
Temperatures will range from 30 to 35 C across mainland Greece, around 32 C in the Ionian Islands and 30 to 34 C in other island areas.
Winds will reach up to 5 Beaufort in the Ionian Islands and 5 to 6 Beaufort in parts of the Aegean.
Temperatures set to fall
According to meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas, the change will become more apparent from the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 12, when rain and thunderstorms are expected to first affect northern and northwestern Greece.
On Sunday and Monday, the weather systems are expected to spread to the Ionian Islands and several parts of mainland Greece, where conditions could be locally intense.
Temperatures will begin falling on Sunday, returning to levels closer to normal for the time of year.
Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis described the development as the first more organized weather change of September, but said it does not yet signal the definitive arrival of autumn.
“In other words, we are not yet talking about a definitive entry into autumn, but about the first more organized change of September, which will limit the prolonged summer pattern of recent days,” Marousakis said in a post.
