A 30-year-old Romanian man has been arrested in Thessaloniki on allegations of transporting three undocumented migrants inside Greece, according to Greek police.

The man was located on Tuesday night, June 9, on the old Thessaloniki–Kavala national road, when officers from the Thessaloniki Aliens Directorate stopped the vehicle he was driving.

During the inspection, police found three foreign nationals in the back seats of the vehicle. The individuals, from Iran and Iraq, reportedly did not have the required residence documents.

According to a statement by the Greek Police (ELAS), the three migrants attempted to escape during the check but were later caught following a foot chase.

Alleged route and payments under investigation

Police said their investigation found that the three individuals had been picked up earlier the same day from a forested area near the Evros River, a region close to Greece’s border with Turkey.

The migrants reportedly told authorities that they had each paid €5,000 to unknown individuals in order to reach Switzerland, their intended final destination.

A case file has been opened against the 30-year-old suspect, while police confiscated the vehicle, a mobile phone and an amount of money as part of the investigation.
