The annual Penny Marathon returns to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in celebration of World Animal Day this Sunday, October 4, bringing together people and their pets in support of animal welfare.
In its eighth year, the Penny Marathon is a volunteer-led event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the care of stray and unwanted animals. Founded in 2012 and named after Penny, an Athens stray, the initiative supports emergency medical treatment, food, vaccinations and sterilizations.

This year’s event features two options: the 10km race which starts at 8:30 a.m. and the 1km route which kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Meeting point for both us at the Canal Cafe. Participants can run, walk or cycle alongside their pets. Participation is free but registration is required.
The day’s program will also include a dog agility demonstration, art activities and, for the first time, OpenAgora, an event bringing together dozens of animal welfare groups and organizations from across Greece. Activities throughout the day will combine recreation, sports, information and awareness-raising initiatives focused on the welfare of stray and unwanted animals. The event also aims to highlight the work of volunteers, charities and animal welfare organizations that rescue and care for animals.
World Animal Day 2026 falls on Sunday, October 4, and this year’s theme is: “See the World Through Their Eyes.”
