A 41-year-old man accused in the fatal stabbing of a 42-year-old female rescuer on the Greek island of Syros will remain in pretrial detention after a judicial council ruled that the circumstances surrounding the case require further clarification.

The decision came after the suspect appeared before the Syros judicial council on Friday, where he submitted a supplementary memorandum along with digital evidence that, according to information cited in the case, had been examined and authenticated by a specialized laboratory.

The material consisted of two photographs. According to the suspect, the first shows the 42-year-old woman entering the couple’s home in Ano Syros, while the second captures her leaving the residence. He claims the second image depicts the moment of the stabbing, which he says occurred inside the house.

In his written submission, the 41-year-old argued that the woman had concealed facial features and did not speak, preventing him from recognizing her. He said he believed he had to defend both his own life and that of his partner. He also maintained that there is no evidence showing the victim was stabbed outside the home.

Later that day, the judicial council granted the suspect’s request to appear in person. He arrived at the Syros courthouse at around 3 p.m., and the hearing lasted approximately one hour.

The judges ultimately ordered that he remain in pretrial detention, concluding that he is suspected of potentially committing a similar offense while the investigation is ongoing.

According to the suspect’s lawyers, they will pursue all available legal remedies seeking his release. They also said they are awaiting the results of toxicology tests and the lifting of telecommunications secrecy as part of the continuing investigation.

The suspect has consistently maintained that he acted in self-defense. Speaking to Greek broadcaster MEGA, he said: “The real evidence was ignored. The images speak for themselves. They show the woman entering my house with a knife, leaving, picking up her backpack, and the video shows the strike. The stabbing happened inside the house, and we submitted the footage in full analysis.”

The judicial council’s decision aligned with the investigating judge’s recommendation that the suspect remain in custody, while the prosecutor had proposed house arrest due to doubts surrounding the case.
