Authorities were placed on high alert after two underage girls, both 17 years old and classmates, fell from the rooftop of a sixth-floor apartment building on Eleftherios Venizelos Avenue in Ilioupoli. One of the girls has since died, while the second remains in a critical condition.
The incident occurred shortly after noon. According to investigators, police confirmed it was a suicide attempt, as the two girls left behind a note that read: “Sorry, we love you.” Before going up to the roof, the pair had approached the building’s property manager and calmly asked where the rooftop key was kept. The manager showed them without suspecting anything.
A neighbor described the sequence of events in harrowing detail: “My friend told them where the keys were, where we always keep them. She hadn’t taken five steps and she heard the thud. The kids had already fallen. How could anyone have imagined the reason they wanted them? She couldn’t have imagined this tragic event.”
Ambulances from the National Emergency Medical Service and a large police presence rushed to the scene. One of the two girls was transferred in critical condition to Asklepieio Voulas Hospital, where doctors have been fighting to keep her alive. The second was transported to the hospital unconscious and was later pronounced dead.
The Investigation
Officers from the Security Directorate are collecting statements from the girls’ families, friends and school environment, trying to understand what drove the two young people to this desperate decision. Their mobile phones and social media activity are also being examined for any warning signs that may have been missed.
