Authorities in Greece are continuing their investigation into the fall of a 13-year-old schoolgirl from a balcony at her school in Haidari, a suburb of Athens, as new witness statements raise questions about the circumstances of the incident.
Preliminary findings have ruled out, at this stage, the possibility that another student pushed her or that a damaged railing gave way. Teachers at the school are reported to have repeatedly warned students not to sit on the specific balcony area, and shortly before the incident, staff had already moved pupils away from the location.
The investigation remains open, with new testimonies being assessed as potentially crucial to understanding exactly what happened.
Conflicting witness accounts
According to police sources, a statement from a friend who was with the girl at the time is being examined. That testimony suggests the teenager may have fallen on her own, and authorities are reportedly also considering the possibility of self-harm as part of the wider inquiry.
However, members of the girl’s family maintain that the incident was an accident. They have also stressed that her condition in hospital remains extremely critical, with even minor signs of improvement being closely monitored.
Other accounts have further complicated the picture. Some parents reportedly told local media that the girl was heard saying she would jump moments before the fall. A man associated with the school also stated that it would be difficult for the incident to have been accidental due to the location from which she fell.
A spokesperson for the Greek police noted that additional testimonies indicate the girl had been sitting on a railing prior to the incident.
Hospital fight and sporting background
The 13-year-old remains hospitalized in serious condition, with medical updates indicating a critical fight for survival.
She is also described as a taekwondo athlete, a fact confirmed by the national taekwondo federation, which expressed deep sadness and support for her and her family. The federation said the young athlete is currently undergoing treatment and that its members are hoping for her recovery and return to everyday life and training.
Greek police continue to examine all possible scenarios surrounding the fall, as investigators work to reconcile differing witness statements and establish a clearer timeline of events at the school in Haidari.
