The issue of recidivism by mentally unstable offenders again resurfaced this past week after a 70-year-old woman was severely injured at a southern Athens marina on Friday morning by a 38-year-old suspect who threw a large rock that hit her in the head.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and remains intubated in an ICU, reports state.

According to media reports, the alleged perpetrator is homeless, shows signs of extreme mental disorder and has escaped no less than 18 times from psychiatric wards in the country.

The suspect was arrested by police motorcyclists shortly after the incident at a Glyfada district marina and jailed, with a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation pending.
