Previously submerged, abandoned village disappears again under the waters

Heavy rainfall and snow over recent months have significantly replenished the Mornos reservoir, restoring water reserves and submerging the abandoned village of Kallio once again after a period of severe depletion.

According to official data from the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP), water reserves have plunged to 192.8 million cubic meters — 64% below the average level of 2010–2024.

The 80 houses in the submerged village, along with their church and primary school, were "sacrificed" to provide water for Athens.
