Μake us preferred on Google Athens is among the cities best placed to deliver a truly enjoyable holiday, according to a recent list published by Time Out. The Greek capital ranks fourth out of 47 destinations worldwide in an assessment of the factors that contribute to wellbeing and enjoyment while travelling.
The ranking is based on BookRetreats.com’s Holiday Happiness Index, developed in collaboration with Harvard clinical psychologist Dr. Natalie Dattilo-Ryan. The study examined 47 cities around the world against criteria including hours of sunshine, sleep quality, the availability of healthy meals, access to nature and walkability.
Lisbon took the top spot with the highest overall score, thanks to its combination of sunny weather, green spaces, easy mobility and a varied food scene.
Athens stands out for how easy it is to explore on foot: according to Time Out, it is the most walkable city in the ranking. It also boasts a very high proportion of restaurants offering healthy options, while its Mediterranean climate and easy access to natural landscapes and beaches round out the qualities behind its strong showing.
Helsinki came in second, followed by Orlando in third. Athens and Edinburgh complete the top five in fourth and fifth place respectively.
