The Modigliani Quartet will open the “Beethoven 200” concert series at the Athens Concert Hall on Wednesday, October 7, with a program tracing the composer’s evolution of the string quartet while placing his music in dialogue with a contemporary work inspired by the visual arts.

The concert begins at 8:30 p.m. in the Dimitris Mitropoulos Hall, with only a few tickets remaining.

The season-long series focuses on Beethoven’s late string quartets, works that transformed the genre and established a lasting reference point for string ensembles.

For its Athens appearance, the Modigliani Quartet will perform Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 6 in B-flat major, Op. 18, including the dramatic finale known as “La Malinconia,” as well as String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135, the composer’s final completed string quartet.

The program will also feature Amedea — visage de jeune fille by Czech composer Kryštof Mařatka, a contemporary work written specifically for the Modigliani Quartet. Inspired by Amedeo Modigliani’s portrait of the same name, the piece creates a connection between painting and music while linking the quartet’s name to the work’s artistic inspiration.

Together, the Beethoven works span two very different points in the composer’s career. The Sixth Quartet reflects the daring of a young Beethoven, while the final quartet points toward the increasingly enigmatic language of his later years. In its finale, Beethoven sets a mysterious question—“Must it be?”—against the movement’s recurring motif.

The concert features violinists Amaury Coeytaux and Loïc Rio, violist Laurent Marfaing and cellist François Kieffer.
