Greece’s National Economy and Finance Minister and Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis is traveling to Ireland for meetings of the Eurogroup and an informal meeting of the EU’s Economic and Financial Affairs Council, known as ECOFIN, on September 18 and 19.

The meetings come as rising energy prices are increasing pressure on households and businesses and putting energy costs back at the center of the European economic debate.

Eurogroup to focus on productivity and growth

The Eurogroup will focus on productivity and growth in the eurozone as Europe seeks to respond to international challenges, accelerate investment and strengthen its competitiveness.

Finance ministers will discuss priorities for boosting innovation and investment, as well as the next steps toward further integration of the European market.

Mathias Cormann, secretary-general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, will also participate in the discussion.

The Eurogroup agenda will also include the latest economic developments and the outlook for the eurozone, with Aurore Lalucq, chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, also taking part.

EU ministers to discuss economic and financial priorities

During the informal ECOFIN meeting, EU finance ministers and central bank governors will exchange views on key macroeconomic developments, financial stability and the European Union’s strategic priorities for economic and financial policy.

The discussions will take place against the backdrop of renewed pressure from higher energy prices on European households and businesses.

Pierrakakis to meet Irish prime minister

Pierrakakis is scheduled to meet Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin on Thursday evening.

He will later address the Eurofi Financial Forum, a major European gathering focused on the financial sector.

During his time in Dublin, Pierrakakis will also hold bilateral meetings with counterparts and institutional leaders.

On Saturday, following the conclusion of the informal ECOFIN meeting, he will participate in a public discussion with Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Simon Harris as part of the Fine Gael Small Business & Enterprise Conference.
