A charred body was found inside a car Tuesday afternoon in Spata, east of Athens, while firefighters were battling a blaze in the area.

The fire broke out at around 3:30 p.m. in low vegetation between the areas of Imeros Pefkos and Etos Steko.

The identity of the victim remains unknown. Authorities are investigating to identify the remains found inside the vehicle.

At 3:42 p.m., just minutes after the fire started, Greece’s 112 emergency alert system issued a warning urging residents in the wider area to remain on alert. The Attica region was under a very high risk of wildfire, rated Category 4, on Tuesday.

121 firefighters battling the blaze

Firefighting forces were quickly reinforced as crews worked to contain the fire.

A total of 121 firefighters, 36 vehicles and two teams from the 1st Special Forest Firefighting Unit are operating at the scene.

Firefighters from Romania and France are also participating in the operation. The European crews are in Greece as part of the European Union’s pre-positioning program.

Two aircraft and two helicopters are making periodic aerial operations.

Volunteers and water tankers provided by the Municipality of Spata are also assisting firefighters in the effort to contain the blaze.
