Μake us preferred on Google The investigation into the helicopter accident that killed two aircraft involved in firefighting operations in Psatha, Attica, has been assigned to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), according to sources from Greece’s Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.
The crash, involving two Bell helicopters operated by McDermond during efforts to combat wildfires in Attica on August 2, 2026, is being examined by the relevant authorities.
According to ministry sources, responsibility for investigating the accident falls under the FAA rather than Greece’s Air Accident Investigation and Aviation Safety Board (HARSIA).
McDermond has already notified the FAA, as required, and the relevant procedures have begun.
The ministry noted that, under the founding law of HARSIA, the organization is explicitly excluded from investigating aircraft involved in aerial firefighting operations.
Meanwhile, the Hellenic Police (ELAS), which was assigned the investigation by the prosecutor’s office, will have the option to use HARSIA’s technical expertise during the inquiry.
