A former Greek javelin champion has died suddenly at the age of 58 after being found unresponsive inside his gym in Heraklion, on the island of Crete.
Giorgos Georgakakis, a well-known figure in the local community and a father of three, was discovered dead in his fitness facility in a central area of the city.
Found Inside Locked Gym
According to local reports, relatives had been trying to reach him for several hours without success. Concerned, they went to the gym he owned and found the premises locked.
After managing to enter the building, they discovered his body and immediately alerted the authorities.
An ambulance transported him to hospital, while police officers conducted an on-site inspection. Sources indicate that Georgakakis had no known health problems and that no suspicious findings were identified during the initial examination of the scene.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
A Respected Athlete and Community Figure
Georgakakis was a former national javelin champion who in recent years ran his own gym in Heraklion. He was widely known and respected in the local community.
Beyond his athletic career, he had dedicated time and effort to supporting children with disabilities through activities at his gym.
He is survived by his wife and their three children.
